ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK: Top officials of the United Nations (UN) met with Taliban officials to talk about a ban on women and girls from workplaces and raised concerns over the impact on ongoing relief activities in the crisis-stricken country.

According to the Independent, Amina Mohammed, the UN’s senior woman member and Sima Bahous, the head of United Nations women arrived on Wednesday in Kabul and held a meeting with the acting foreign minister of the Taliban, who have imposed a brutal restriction on women employment and stopped girls from attending high school and university.

UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York that Amina Mohammed also met with the UN staff, fund groups, and Afghan women “to take stock of the circumstances, convey solidarity, and discuss ways to promote and protect women’s rights”.

Haq said that Amina Mohammed “stressed a need to uphold human rights, especially for girls and women” and was “encouraged by exemptions” to the ban on female aid workers.

In December, the Taliban government banned women and girls from working in aid efforts and several other workspaces until further notice, leaving crucial relief programs in the country amid extreme economic crisis and famine in a lurch.
