KARACHI: The Karachi Tannery Association south zone (PTA-SZ), in collaboration with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and GEF (Global Environment Facility), handed over modern machinery along with state-of-the-art equipment to Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) for the cleanliness Korangi Leather Sector.
The MD of SSWMB Zubair Ahmed Chana, while addressing the ceremony, said that the SSWMB team was already engaged in collecting garbage, transporting, and disposal of the landfill site from Sector 7A Korangi Leather Sector, where PTA (SZ) Environmental Society provided full support.
UNIDO and GEF Support for leather sector
He added the addition of modern equipment provided by UNIDO-GEF would further improve their work in cleaning the area.
Addressing the function President, PTA (SZ) ES Gulzar Feroze hailed the efforts of Zubair Ahmed Chana and his team and added that due to their efforts and strategy, all issues were settled smoothly.
He further added that PTA (SZ) support is being provided in the cleaning and garbage collection work and the operational machinery, worth$300,000, is part of a larger $2 million project assisted by UNIDO and GEF under the Korangi Leather Area project for the reduction of GHG emissions.
The project supports more than 120 tanneries (leather sector) most in need of services, including the provision of over 375 waste collection bins, compactor trucks, multi loaders, mechanical sweepers, tractor trolleys, etc., to assist in the garbage collection and disposal operations, he added.
