RIYADH: UNESCO has added Saudi Khawlani coffee – the knowledge and skills associated with its cultivation – and Camel Heda’a to 2022’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, reported the Saudi Press Agency.

The decision was taken during the UN’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage on Wednesday.

Khawlani Coffee

Khawlani is among the most luxurious and finest types of coffee in the world and has been grown in the south of the Kingdom for over eight centuries. It is ingrained in the customs, poetry, and songs of the local people.

Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with Oman and the UAE, headed the joint application to register Camel Heda’a – an oral tradition where herders communicate with their kettle. The communication includes guiding camels to safety amid sandstorms, directing them to open their mouths to feed and making them drop onto their knees so they could be mounted.

UNESCO now has 11 cultural elements from Saudi Arabia

With the new additions, Saudi Arabia has now registered 11 cultural elements with UNESCO which include the Majlis, the Najdi Ardah dance, Arabic coffee, the flute, falconry, the Asiri cat, the Sadu weaving craft, the palm tree, and Arabic calligraphy.

The registration is part of the nation’s Vision 2030 which aims to document Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage for future generations both at the domestic and global levels.
