ISLAMABAD: Leaky gut syndrome, characterized by symptoms like regular diarrhea or constipation, skin issues, and headaches, has gained attention on social media platforms like TikTok. Referred to as the potential for objects to pass through the intestinal lining, leaky gut syndrome has sparked interest among individuals seeking to understand and address gut-related concerns.
Before self-diagnosing with leaky gut syndrome, it is essential to consider a few key points. Dr. William Li, a physician and bestselling author, explains that the intestines play a crucial role in the digestive system, spanning approximately 25 feet in length. They are protected by a robust lining that prevents the leakage of food, digestive juices, and bacteria into the body.
“When that lining is damaged, these substances leak from inside the gut to its outside, like a punctured garden hose, and can cause a severe inflammatory response in your belly,” Dr. Li explains.
Various factors can contribute to a leaky gut. Harvard Health notes that while every individual’s gut has some level of permeability, an increase in permeability can lead to problems. Specific chronic gastrointestinal diseases, such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, have been linked to leaky gut.
