DUBAI: A UN food agency worker has been killed in an attack in Yemen, UN officials said Friday. AFP that the incident took place in Taiz province in southern Yemen.
Local officials expressed condolences to WFP’s staffer family and said that the security forces will take measures to arrest the attackers.
UN Worker Killed in Yemen
A WFP official also confirmed the incident to AFP, adding: “The UN organization is deeply saddened that a dedicated member was killed in Yemen on Friday by unknown armed men. The official added that they could not comment further and that the rest of the information will be shared soon.
The head of the Yemeni presidential council, Rashad Al-Alimi has issued directives to arrest the attackers. Rashad Al-Alimi spoke by telephone with Taiz governor, who said that the assailant had been identified.
Taiz province is controlled by the internationally recognized government but is surrounded and obstructed by areas under Houthi control.
Many people have been killed in more than eight years of war in Yemen, resulting in one of the world’s worst humanitarian situations.
Earlier, in 2018, a Lebanese aid worker, who worked for the IC RC was also killed by unknown attackers in Taiz province.
