WASHINGTON: The United Nations has warned Israel that it will suspend aid operations across Gaza unless immediate actions are taken to enhance the safety and security of humanitarian workers, according to two senior UN officials familiar with the matter.

In a letter addressed to senior Israeli officials earlier this month, the UN emphasized the urgent need for direct communication channels between UN workers and Israeli forces operating in Gaza. The letter also outlined additional measures aimed at safeguarding humanitarian activities in the region, the officials said.

While discussions between the UN and Israeli authorities are ongoing, no final decision has been made regarding the suspension of aid operations in Gaza, the officials clarified.

Israeli military officials have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

The move comes amid escalating concerns over the safety of humanitarian workers in Gaza. Israel has previously acknowledged incidents involving military strikes that resulted in casualties among aid workers, including a high-profile attack in April that claimed the lives of seven workers affiliated with the World Central Kitchen.

In response to mounting security risks, the UN World Food Program (WFP) has already halted aid deliveries from a pier constructed with US support in Gaza, citing security concerns.

Aid organizations, including the UN, have expressed frustration over the lack of effective communication mechanisms with Israeli forces on the ground. Such communication channels, typically established through “deconfliction” procedures in conflict zones worldwide, are crucial for protecting aid workers from attacks by armed combatants.

Steve Taravella, a spokesperson for the World Food Program, highlighted the precarious situation faced by humanitarian operations in Gaza. “Missiles have struck our premises despite efforts to deconflict,” Taravella stated, underscoring the challenges encountered by aid agencies operating in the volatile region.

Additionally, aid officials have raised alarms about growing lawlessness in Gaza, urging Israel to step up efforts to bolster overall security conditions that affect humanitarian operations.
