NEW YORK CITY: The United Nations (UN) on Monday urged for renewed diplomatic process to reignite the stalled Syrian peace process, stressing the critical need for solid engagement and coordination among all parties to address the humanitarian crisis in the country.
The UN’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen underlined the potential for a reviwed diplomatic efforts as there is substantial engagement. He urged all stakeholders involved in the conflict to come to the dialogue table.
He said that the primary goals are the resumption of the intra-Syrian political process, sacilitated by UN, especially through the reconvening of the Constitutional Committee (CC), and the implementation of confidence-building measures.
Pedersen added that addressing the serious and worsening humanitarian situation in the country is not only a humanitarian requirement but would bring some confidence that progress on political matters is also possible.
UNSC meeting on Syria
His statement came during a UN Security Council meeting on Syria, two weeks after council members failed to agree an extension of a main cross-border mechanism that for years ensured international humanitarian aid to enter northwestern Syria from Turkiye and reach more four million people in need in opposition-held parts.
Pedersen voiced deep disappointment at the Security Council’s failure to re-authorize the Bab Al-Hawa crossing, which he termed as a lifeline for millions of civilians.
He demanded from the international community to expedite its efforts to ensure the humanitarian aid continues to flow across borders.
