GENEVA: The UN human rights office has revised its list of companies engaged in business activities with Israeli settlements, removing 15 companies that were no longer involved, according to a spokesperson on Friday. The update comes amid increased violence in the West Bank over the past 15 months, involving clashes, attacks, and settler mob incidents.

Due to budget constraints, the UN list was limited in scope and could only review the original list of 112 companies, said spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani during a press briefing. There has been no immediate response from Israel, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the United States had previously rejected the previous version, expressing concerns about the disproportionate focus on Israel by the Geneva-based council.

UN List is Considered Important Tool by Civil Society Groups

Mandated by the UN Human Rights Council in 2016 but released in 2020, the database is considered an important tool by civil society groups to promote transparency around business activities in the West Bank. It aims to encourage companies to reassess their involvement in the occupied territories.

Most of the companies initially listed were based in Israel, but it also included international firms from the United States, Britain, France, and other countries. The latest update removed General Mills, a packaged food maker, from the list, while companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, and Airbnb remained listed.
