SEOUL: North Korea’s ministry of foreign affairs on Sunday called on the United Nations (UN) to demand an immediate halt to joint military exercise by the United States (US) and South Korea. North Korea’s vice foreign minister Kim Son Gyong said that the exercise and rhetoric from the allies are “irresponsibly raising the level of hostility,”.

Officials from the US and South Korea said on Friday that they will conduct more than ten days of large-scale military drills in March, including amphibious landings.

Washington and Seoul say the drills are in self-defense and are essential to counter the growing threats from North Korea’s nuclear weapons ballistic missile programs, which are banned by United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

Earlier, North Korea on Saturday accused the US for what it said was the failure of international weapons control systems and said its nuclear weapons were a just reply to ensure the balance of power in the region.

The allies also carried out a combined air exercise with an American long-range bomber and South Korea’s jet fighters on Friday, and have been conducting weeks of drills for special rations forces.

Kim added that “The United Nations and the world will have to strongly ask Washington and Seoul to immediately stop their inflammatory remarks and combined military drills.

It is deplorable that the United Nations (UN) has been constantly silent on the drills, which have a “clear aggressive nature,”.

According to Reuters, in February, Kim claimed that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been “extremely unbalanced, unfair,” on North Korea’s missile tests.
