UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Sunday following United States airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, said Guyana, which holds the UN body’s rotating chair for June.

The meeting, scheduled for 3:00 pm (1900 GMT), will be the Security Council’s third since Israel launched a military campaign against Iran on June 13.

The UN Security Council emergency meeting is taking place at Iran’s request. Iran’s request was supported by Russia, China, and Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar made this important announcement through the social media platform X, confirming that an emergency session of the UN Security Council is being convened.

According to Ishaq Dar, the emergency meeting is being held at the request of Iran and is supported by Pakistan, China, and Russia.

“In light of the grave and far-reaching consequences of the United States’ savage and criminal actions for international peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran urgently requests the Security Council to convene an emergency meeting without delay to address this blatant and unlawful act of aggression,” Iran’s Permanent Representative of Iran to the UN Amir Saeid Iravani said in the letter addressed to President of the Security Council and UN Secretary-General.

The meeting of the UN Security Council is also necessary “to condemn [the actions mentioned] in the strongest possible terms, and to take all necessary measures under its Charter-mandated responsibilities that the perpetrator of such heinous crimes is held fully accountable and does not go unpunished,” Iran’s Permanent Representative added.

US President Donald Trump reported earlier that the US Air Force had conducted a successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran.

Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday condemned the US strikes and warned that Tehran reserves the right to retaliate in self-defence.

Araghchi warned that the US will be held responsible for the consequences.

He described the strikes as an “unprecedented violation of the United Nations Charter and international law” and a crossing of Iran’s “final red line.”

“The United States, in collusion with the genocidal Israeli regime, has launched a military attack on the territorial integrity of a sovereign UN member state,” said Araghchi. “This is a grave and unforgivable violation of international law.”

He denounced the US administration for launching attacks during ongoing diplomatic efforts, adding, “Diplomacy should always remain open, but the US chose aggression in the middle of talks.”

“We were in the middle of diplomacy—negotiations with the Europeans were ongoing in Geneva just two days ago,” he said.

“It is not Iran that walked away from talks. It was the United States that destroyed the diplomatic process. This aggression has shut the door, at least for now.”

“Iran has done nothing wrong. Our nuclear programme remains peaceful and in line with international agreements,” he said.

The Iranian top diplomat called on the international community to prevent further escalation, urging the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session.
