ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold closed-door consultations on Monday, May 5, to address rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
According to Business Standard, the meeting, scheduled for 3pm New York time by the Greek Presidency, was convened at Islamabad’s request.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office announced on May 4 that it would update the UN on regional developments following, including India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
In addition to the five permanent members with veto power — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States — the 10 non-permanent members in the council are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia.
Moscow ready to help resolve standoff
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has confirmed to Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar Moscow’s readiness to help resolve the standoff between New Delhi and Islamabad, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Telegram following a telephone conversation between the two officials, News.Az reported citing TASS.
“Special attention was paid to the significant increase in the tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad. The Russian side stressed its readiness to contribute to a political settlement of the situation that arose as a result of a terrorist attack on April 22 in the Pahalgama area, subject to the mutual desire of Islamabad and New Delhi,” the ministry said.

Also, the ministers discussed various aspects of Russian-Pakistani cooperation. The conversation took place on the initiative of Pakistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
A Russian foreign ministry press release stated: On May 4, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Mohammad Ishaq Dar, at the latter’s initiative. The discussion focused on various aspects of Russia-Pakistan cooperation. The parties specifically discussed the dangerously growing tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad. The Russian side stressed its readiness to contribute to a political settlement of the situation triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area, should both Islamabad and New Delhi be interested.
Pakistan to brief UNSC
Earlier, according to state-run Radio Pakistan, Pakistan decided to formally brief the UN Security Council on the latest regional developments.
To this respect, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had directed Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad to take immediate steps to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council.
Pakistan will inform the UN Security Council about India’s aggressive actions, provocations, and inflammatory statements. It will specifically highlight India’s illegal measures aimed at suspending the Indus Water Treaty.
Besides, Pakistan will make it clear that how India’s aggressive actions are endangering peace and security in South Asia and beyond.
