UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council is set to gather for an emergency meeting in response to a request from Russia. The meeting comes in the wake of a deadly attack on the Russian city of Belgorod, which Moscow attributes to Ukrainian forces.

The Russian provincial capital of Belgorod experienced a shocking assault that killed 14 people, including two children, and left 108 others injured. The Russian Investigative Committee asserted that missiles fired by Ukrainian forces struck various civilian targets, including a skating rink, a shopping center, and residential buildings. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted most of the incoming rockets, preventing even more significant casualties.

Earlier, Russia launched a large-scale air assault on Ukraine, resulting in 39 fatalities. The governor of the Bryansk region also reported civilian casualties in strikes on two villages. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared January 1 as a day of mourning for the lives lost in these attacks, underscoring the severity of the situation.

UN Security Council Meeting

The UN Security Council meeting, instigated by Russia’s request, is geared towards addressing the Belgorod incident and discussing the intensifying tensions between the two nations. Notably, members of the UN Security Council, including the United States, France, and Britain, have previously condemned the attacks.
