NEW YORK: The US, Britain and France on Wednesday opposed a Russia-backed UN Security Council statement, condemning an attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Syria, which Tehran has blamed on Israel.
Press statements by the 15-member council have to be approved by consensus. The US, supported by Britain and France and Britain, told the council that many of the facts regarding Damascus attacks remained unclear and there was no consensus among council members on the matter.
Russia’s deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy in a post on X condemned the double standards of the Western ‘troika’ in opposing the statement.
The UN Security Council has issued statements in the past criticizing attacks on diplomatic premises.
Meanwhile, the European Union on Wednesday condemned the strike saying the sanctity of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected.
The US has not yet confirmed the status of the building attacked in Damascus, but said that it would be a matter of concern if it was a diplomatic mission.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the strike, which destroyed a consular building near the main embassy complex, killing seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Iran has blamed Israel for violating the UN Charter and international law.
