NEW YORK: A strong majority of the UN Security Council urged Taliban rulers in Afghanistan on Friday to immediately reverse all “oppressive” restrictions on women and girls including the latest ban on women working for aid organizations.
The joint statement from 11 council members said that women aid workers are important to addressing Afghanistan’s “dire humanitarian situation” as they provide life-saving support to girls and women.

UAE Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, who called for the meeting with Japan, said that “the key takeaways” from the discussion were the unity from humanitarian actors that the effort they are doing is necessary and the unity in the UNSC to remain engaged, not only to express solidarity but practically to help move the situation on the ground towards a better line. Nusseibeh said that UNSC members are discussing next steps.
Meanwhile, the IRC asked the UN to remain engaged with the Taliban to restore the previous situation where female and male workers can safely and effectively work to assist all needy people in Afghanistan.
