BAGHDAD: UN chief Antonio Guterres arrived in Iraq for his first trip in six years Tuesday to express “solidarity” following a drawn-out political catastrophe in the country.
The UN Secretary General said that he wanted to show “solidarity” with the citizens and the democratic organizations of Iraq and a solidarity that suggests that the UN is fully committed to back the consolidation of the different institutions in the country.
UN Chief to meet Iraq’s Prime Minister
The UN chief added that he also wanted to express his “confidence” that the people of Iraq will be able to overcome the challenges they confront through an inclusive dialogue.

Guterres is due to hold a meeting with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, representatives of women’s and youth on Wednesday. The UN chief will also visit a camp for displaced people while also visit Erbil to hold a meeting with representatives of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
His last trip to Iraq was back in spring 2017.
