NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned North Korea’s launch of a military spy satellite into orbit, his spokesman stated in a statement on Tuesday.
The UN chief strongly denounces the launch of yet another army satellite using ballistic missile technology by North Korea, his spokesman Farhan Haq said.
Earlier, the US also strongly denounced North Korea over its space launch, describing it a “brazen violation” of UN sanctions that could undermine stability in the region, Western media reported on Tuesday.
North Korea Satellite Launch
In a statement, National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson said that the launch raises tensions, and risks undermining the security in the region and beyond. North Korean official media stated earlier that the nation had succeeded in putting a reconnaissance satellite in orbit.
According to KCNA, a rocket carrying the satellite blasted off Tuesday from North Pyongan province, flew along its designated path and “exactly put the reconnaissance satellite ‘Malligyong-1’ on its orbit.
Adrienne Watson stressed that the launch involved latest technologies that are “directly linked” to the North’s ballistic missile program, and which North Korea is banned from testing by multiple UNSC resolutions.

The statement maintained that the door has not locked on diplomacy but North Korea should end its provocative acts immediately and choose engagement.
As per media reports, North Korea has issued formal notice of a satellite launch, Japan said, with Pyongyang’s third attempt to be in the sky coming after it possibly received technical advice from Russia in exchange for arms transfers.
North Korea’s previous efforts to send a spy satellite into orbit in May and August both failed, and Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo have repeatedly warned Pyongyang not to proceed with another launch, which would violate many rounds of UN resolutions, according to AFP news agency.
