NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting international peace and security, including its contributions to multilateral diplomacy, peacekeeping and efforts to address regional conflicts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met António Guterres in New York on Friday and discussed major regional and international developments, including the Middle East and the security situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
In a wide-ranging discussion, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in promoting international peace and development
The Prime Minister deeply appreciated the Secretary-General’s leadership and lauded his principled role in upholding the UN Charter across the entire spectrum of the organisation’s work for the betterment of humanity.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and appreciated Guterres’ role in advancing the organisation’s work.
Middle East
The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional tensions and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
The Prime Minister sensitised the Secretary-General on the rising trend of Islamophobia, especially in our immediate neighbourhood, necessitating effective international action to curb its prevalence.
Afghanistan Security
The two leaders also discussed developments in Afghanistan and what Pakistan described as a sharp increase in terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.
Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s concerns over cross-border terrorism and its impact on regional peace and security.
Guterres commended Pakistan’s role at the United Nations and its contribution to international peace and security.
The Secretary-General commended Pakistan’s leading role and strong voice at the UN, its contribution to international peace and security and particularly appreciated the important mediation efforts undertaken by Pakistan for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and durable peace and stability in the region.
The Secretary-General also appreciated Pakistan’s role and sacrifices in countering terrorism.
