GENEVA: The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Turk, has warned about the escalating crisis in Gaza, expressing deep concern over the heightened risk of atrocity crimes in the region amid ongoing Israeli military bombardments.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Turk urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and take immediate measures to prevent Israel from committing such grave violations.
“My humanitarian colleagues have described the situation as apocalyptic. In these circumstances, there is a heightened risk of atrocity crimes,” Turk emphasized. “Measures need to be taken urgently, both by the parties concerned and by all states, particularly those with influence, to prevent any such crimes.”
Israel Continues Heavy Bombardments in Gaza
Turk’s statement comes amid heavy Israeli bombardment and a resumption of military operations in Gaza, which is pushing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) to the brink. The agency highlighted the challenges it faces, including the lack of regular humanitarian and fuel deliveries, dependency on a single crossing point, and overwhelming humanitarian needs in Gaza.
The Palestinian envoy to the UK, Husam Zomlot, welcomed the announcement by the US State Department regarding visa restrictions on Israeli settlers involved in undermining peace, security, or stability in the West Bank. Zomlot stressed the need for more sanctions on all illegal colonial settlers, including dual nationals, the state supporting them, and the organizations funding them.
Meanwhile, civilians in Gaza are enduring what the UN human rights chief described as “utter, deepening horror.” Volker Turk called for an urgent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing that Palestinians in Gaza continue to be relentlessly bombarded by Israel, resulting in collective punishment.
