NEW YORK: The United Nations (UN) on Wednesday voted to oust Iran from a women’s rights body after Iran’s crackdown against women-led protests in Tehran. A simple majority was needed to approve the resolution, which was proposed by the US, and opposed by Russia and China.

29 members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) voted in support, 8 countries voted against it, and 16 abstained from the process. Tehran expressed disappointment with the decision of the UN body and had previously said that it would create an unwelcome precedent.

Protest demonstrations have rocked Iran for months after the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in detention in September. The government of Iran has responded to the protest with harsh measures and carried out its second execution linked to the protests.

Human rights organizations said that dozens of people had been killed during the protests in Iran.

It may be recalled that the 45-member Commission on the Status of Women, the United Nations’ main women’s rights group, was established in 1946 and held an annual meeting in March to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.
