KINSHASA: UN officials said that a UN peacekeeper from South Africa was killed and another injured in an attack on their aircraft in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

A spokesperson said that the incident took place when their helicopter came under fire at around 3:00 pm during a flight to Goma. The spokesman for the UN mission in the DRC Amadou said that the source of the fire that hit the helicopter was not yet known.

Militias have inundated eastern DRC for several decades, many of them a legacy of wars that widening during the 1990s and 2000s. Earlier, East African leaders called Saturday for an immediate ceasefire in the African country, at an extraordinary summit, which was called to find ways resolve the crisis.
