UITED NATIONS: The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) experts have said that the forced eviction and displacement of the Ghaith-Sub Laban family and many other Palestinian families in east Jerusalem by Israelis forces may amount to a war crime of forcible transfer and must be immediately reversed.
They said in a statement that it was very shocking and heartbreaking to see an elderly Palestinian couple, Mustafa Sub Laban and Nora Ghaith, and abondoned from their family home where they lived all their lives and raised their kids.
Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory Francesca Albanese and other experts said that as they have repeatedly said forced evictions of Palestinians in the city are part of the apartheid machinery of Israel, aimed to to consolidate Jewish ownership of the city and racially dominate the its population.
Israli police evicted Mustafa Sub Laban and Nora Ghaith from their family home in the east Jerusalem in the early hours of July 11.
The family, who had a protected lease on their house since 1953, reportedly faced continous harassment and cases from Israeli authorities and settlers trying to occuppy their home under an inherently discriminatory legislation that applies to Palestinian resdents in the city.
The experts said that the case of the family was a reflection of a systematic and widespread practice by Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians from the city and “de-palestinize” it
Palestinian families at risk of forced eviction
In east Jerusalem, there are nearly 150 Palestinian families at risk of forced eviction by Israeli authorities and settler bodies.
The experts said that Israel’s transfer of its own population into the occupied territory of Palestine is a gross violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime. It must immediately stop these deliberate activities, which not only violate Palestinians’ rights to self-determination, development, non-discrimination, adequate housing and property, but also traumatize the families and the whole Palestinian community living defenceless under Israeli rule.
