ISLAMABAD: Under a proposed United Nations (UN) deal, which was presented on Sunday, seeks the protection of 30 percent of the planet. Under the agreement, it is also proposed that as an annual aid rich countries will provide $20 billion in a bid to save those countries’ ecosystems.

The venue of the COP15 biodiversity summit was Canada’s Montreal city, and the meeting was chaired by China. A compromise draft was presented, which aims to agree on saving all species and the necessary ecosystems without which life on the planet would cease to exist.

From 7-19 December 2022 in Montreal, Canada, the governments from around the world will come together to agree on a new set of goals to guide global action through 2030 to halt and reverse nature loss.

Nature is critical to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Adoption of a bold global biodiversity framework that addresses the key drivers of nature loss is needed to secure our own health and well-being alongside that of the planet.

The proposal further seeks rich nations to provide developing countries with funds of $20 billion by 2025, which would be required to rise to $30 yearly by the year 2030.

The draft text calls for effective management, conservation of ecosystems

The text also seeks countries to make sure and facilitate that by 2030 30 percent of the coastal and marine zone, inland water, and terrestrial areas are, in reality, managed and conserved in an effective manner.

Although numerous conservationists have lauded the draft package, the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 196 signatories is required to agree on it before it is finalized.
