UN Deputy Secretary-General Acknowledges AI Potential

NEW YORK: UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed acknowledging the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) said that the technology must be used with safeguards, Western media reported on Tuesday.

During a a press conference on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York she said that the new era of technology is of great concern to everyone.

She said that the technology has massive potential for the SDGs (sustainable development goals) whether it’s health, or it’s industry, cities and education.

Mohammed said for the first time the AI had been mentioned at the UN General Assembly.

She said that that 88 heads of state attended the UNGA session this year.

Afghanistan getting bad for women

UN Deputy Secretary-General said that she was disappointed at the condition of women’s rights in Afghanistan, which was ruled by the Taliban since 2021. She said that Afghanistan was getting bad for women.

Mohammed lauded the increased presence of member states’ finance ministers at the UNGA.

She pointed out that the SDG summit, on the sidelines of the UNGA, witnessed an impressive increase in involvement and awareness of development goals.

The UN official said that this year’s summit featured 165 speakers as opposed to the 100 which spoke in 2019.

UN Under Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management Movses Abelian said more than 2,000 bilateral meetings had been held on the sidelines of the General Assembly, which were participated by at least 13,000 diplomats, 2,500 journalists, and 40,000 guests.
