NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that 2023 stands out as a year marked by shattered temperature records, unprecedented droughts, fires, and floods across the globe. These disasters are further exacerbated by growing poverty and inequality, as those with fewer resources are often the most vulnerable to extreme weather events.

They may inhabit regions prone to flooding and drought, making them less equipped to cope with and recover from the resulting damages, thereby experiencing a disproportionate burden and a heightened risk of falling deeper into poverty.

The theme for this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future.” Guterres emphasizes the importance of nations working together to break the cycle of poverty and disaster. This includes adhering to the Paris Agreement, striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The UN Secretary-General also underscores the need to address global inequality by making the Loss and Damage Fund operational at COP28 this year. Moreover, he emphasizes the goal of ensuring that every individual on the planet has access to an early warning system by 2027.

Guterres concludes by calling for a renewed commitment to investing in resilience and adaptation, working towards a secure and equitable future for people everywhere.
