UN Chief Urges Gaza, Israel to Observe Egypt-mediated Ceasefire

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed Saturday night’s ceasefire deal in Gaza and Israel and said that only a negotiated political solution will lead to enduring peace and end the destructive cycles of violence for always.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, the UN chief welcomed the truce and extended his deepest condolences to the families of the violence victims.

He said the hostilities have led to unnecessary human suffering and the latest round of fighting, which erupted 5 days ago.

The Secretary-General commended Egypt’s important role in bringing the enmities to an end, alongside the efforts of Lebanon, Qatar, and the US to reach a ceasefire.

The statement continued that the Secretary-General called on all sides to respect the ceasefire agreement.

UN chief reaffirms commitment to two-state solution

Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to the two-state solution based on relevant UN resolutions, international law, prior deals, and the necessity of restoring a political horizon.

The statement added that he reiterated that only a negotiated political solution would lead to enduring peace and end the devastating cycles of violence.
