New York: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday strongly condemned the Israeli strike in Gaza, killing seven aid workers, terming the attack an unconscionable act.
He said that the recent strike highlighted the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Seven staff members from World Central Kitchen, were killed in Gaza on Monday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted that his military had targeted the group’s convoy accidentally. Australian, British, Palestinian, Polish and US-Canadian employees were among the dead.
Guterres in a speech to the UN General Assembly said since the war started between Israel and Hamas on October 7 in Gaza, at least 196 aid workers have been killed.
He went on to say the recent strike shows yet again the urgent need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional freedom of hostages, and the expansion of humanitarian assistance into Gaza.
The UN Security Council last week adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire, with the US abstaining from the voting process.
Guterres said stressed the resolution must be implemented without any delay.
Earlier, Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the deaths had highlighted a complete disrespect for international humanitarian law and a disregard for the protection of aid workers.
