New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a meeting presided over by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday that Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine is causing great suffering and devastation to the country and its public, fueling global economic difficulties triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During a UN Security Council meeting, Guterres said that tensions between the big powers and the risks of conflict through misadventure or miscalculation are at a historic high.
Lavrov presided over the meeting on multilateralism and the founding UN Charter as Russia holds the monthly rotating presidency of the fifteen-member body for April. Russia’s FM told the council that the world, like during the Cold War, has reached the dangerous, possibly even more dangerous, threshold.
UN Tries to Save Deal
As the United Nations tries to save a deal that allows the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine’s grain that could expire on 18 May, Guterres also urged the continued implementation of that agreement and a related pact in which the UN pledged to help facilitate Moscow’s own grain and fertilizer exports. He said they demonstrate that such cooperation is vital for greater security and prosperity.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Ambassador, brought with her to the conference Elizabeth Whelan, sister of Paul Whelan, a US convicted in Russia of spying in 2020 and declared by Washington wrongfully imprisoned.
Ahead of the meeting, Thomas-Greenfield told reporters that the United States had prepared a proposal for Paul’s release, and it urged Russia to move on that proposal.
