AMMAN: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Jordan’s King Abdullah II have met in Amman on Monday to discuss the recent development in Gaza and the UN’s role in carrying out humanitarian operations in the war-hit region, Arab media reported.

During the meeting both sides underscored the urgency of global intervention to end the humanitarian crisis in the region.

King Abdullah briefed the visiting top UN official about Jordan’s proactive measures in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza through all available channels, highlighting the country’s coordination with international partners to help boost humanitarian efforts.

They also stressed the need to continue supporting the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees to help its humanitarian operations.

UNRWA on Sunday said that Israel had stopped it from making aid deliveries in the north of Gaza, where the threat of famine is looming.

The UN Security Council Monday adopted a resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, with the US, Israel’s ally abstaining.

King Abdullah reaffirmed the significance of an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza which would enable its residents to return to their homes.

He also took a strong position against the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, warning against the rise in extremist settler violence.
