NEW YORK: Secretary-General of United Nations Antonio Guterres on Friday said that scattered measures for humanitarian aid to war-hit Gaza are not enough, after Israel told the UN it will allow increase in aid deliveries.

Guterres told reporters at the UN’s New York headquarters scattered measures are not enough as they need a paradigm shift.

Earlier he had said that in the aftermath of Israel’s killing of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, the UN was informed by the Israeli government of its intention to allow a meaningful increase in humanitarian assistance distributed in Gaza.

Israel on Friday announced that it would allow temporary aid deliveries into northern Gaza facing threat of famine, hours after the United States warned of a potential change in its policy over Israel’s war against Hamas.

According to the charity Oxfam Palestinians in north of Gaza have eaten an average of just 245 calories per day since January.

Charities have blamed Israel for interrupting aid deliveries, but Israel defending its actions said humanitarian groups’ inability to distribute aid is the main reason for food shortages in Gaza.

According to the health ministry in Gaza, Israel relentless bombardment has killed at least 33,091 people, mostly children and women, while the United Nations has warned of hunger catastrophe.
