UN Chief Asks Russia to Revive Black Sea Grain Agreement

NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that he has sent a letter to Russia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Lavrov that presented a “set of solid proposals” for the renewal of the Black Sea grain agreement, Western media reported on Thursday.

The UN chief told journalists during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York that they have some solid solutions for the concerns permitting for effective access of Russia’s food and fertilizers to international markets at an appropriate price.

He added, “We think that the Black Sea agreement has given a very significant contribution to make the food markets more suitable to our purposes of food security,”. The UN chief said that the agreement brought prices down and also created conditions for access to international markets of many nations.

He said that they believed it would be very significant to renew the agreement and at the same time, they took into concern Moscow’s requests, and he thought that they presented a suggestion that could be the basis for the renewal of the initiative.  He added that the renewal of the agreement should be stable.

The UN chief further said that they could not have a Black Sea agreement that moves from suspension to suspension and from crisis to crisis.  He was of the view that they needed to have something that works for the benefit of everyone.
