UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution expressing continued support for Ukraine, as the United States abstained during the vote marking four years since Russia’s invasion.

The resolution reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

It also called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, urging efforts toward a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, according to AFP.

A total of 107 member states voted in favour of the measure, 12 opposed it, and 51 abstained. The United States was among the countries that did not take a position.

Ahead of the vote, Washington had pushed for a separate ballot on provisions related to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and international law. The proposal, however, failed to secure approval.

The abstention reflects a broader shift in US policy following the transition from President Joe Biden to Donald Trump last year, with Washington’s previously firm backing of Ukraine showing signs of cooling.
