GENEVA: United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk has called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia as his office expressed alarm at the intensification of assaults, western media reported on Tuesday.

Deadly attacks hit residential compounds in Ukraine and a Russian border region earlier on Tuesday as waves of air attacks also injured dozens and prompted Ukraine to urge speedier Western arms shipments.

“Alarming escalation of hostilities, dozens of civilian people killed in Russia and Ukraine. Global humanitarian law bars indiscriminate assaults and attacks against civilian infrastructure,” the UN Human Rights Office stated on X.

“Volker Turk urges urgent measures to de-escalate, ensure safety of civilian population and respect global law.”

The bombing mainly of Ukraine and northeastern Kharkiv came less than 24 hours following Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to step up attacks after an unprecedented Ukrainian assault on the Belgorod, Russia.

Tuesday’s assaults came following an escalation in the current war in recent days, with Russia launching a wave of attacks on Friday across Ukrainian areas and cities, including Kyiv, that killed around 39 people.
