RAMALLAH: The UN has asked an end to the irrational escalation between Palestine and Israel.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned that recent steps taken by Israel would lead to more bloodshed and violence. In a statement, Turk feared that the recent steps taken by Israel can only serve to fuel abuses.

He warned that the hateful rhetoric can only lead to more bloodshed and violence. The UN high commissioner said that instead of repetition of the failed methods of violence, all concerned to break out of the irrational escalation that only ended with loss of life, sheer despair and dead bodies.

“Collective punishment including house demolitions, are prohibited as per international law and are unsuited with provisions of international and human rights laws, he noted.

He called for immediate measures to de-escalate tensions in the region. He said that international standards should be maintained in probing deaths and serious injuries.

Turk said: “Exemption has spread, which hints that abuses are permitted.”

The United Nations High Commissioner’s warning came as the Palestinian National Initiative Party’s secretary-general criticized the favoritism of the US in failing to press the Israel into ending assaults on Palestinian people in the East Jerusalem and West Bank.

He made the remarks after Palestinian medical sources said that 13 Palestinians were wounded during clashes with the Israeli troops in the West Bank on Saturday.
