UN, Arab League Voice Concern over Attempts to Censor Palestinian Curriculum

CAIRO: The United Nations and Arab League on Monday expressed concern over attempts to censor the curriculum being taught in Palestinian schools. The world’s top forums said that the Palestinian education system should be protected from these attempts.

The Educational Affairs of the Arab League and the United Nation Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees raised the issue during a joint meeting in Egypt’s capital on Monday.  On the occasion, Dr. Tamer Anis, a representative of the Arab League, raised the matter and drew attention to Israeli attempts to censor the Palestinian curriculum.

The representative of the Arab League urged support for the Palestinian Ministry of Education and expressed concern over it. According to Arab news in the current year about attempts by Israeli authorities to impose a curriculum in schools in East Jerusalem that includes removing all photos of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Palestinian flag, and the word Palestine.

The UNRWA’s Deputy Director of Education, Moritz Bilagher, reiterated that the Palestinian refugee crisis is not only the responsibility of the Arab world but rather a global issue for which the world must also take responsibility.
