GENEVA: The head of the United Nations humanitarian relief agency, Martin Griffiths, issued a resounding call on Tuesday for the immediate release of all individuals who have been taken hostage amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas men.
In a firm statement, Griffiths emphasized, “My message to all parties involved is unequivocal: The laws of war must be upheld. Those held captive must be treated with humanity, and hostages must be released promptly.”
This appeal comes in the wake of Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant’s announcement on Monday, where he indicated an escalation of measures against the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. The proposed measures include implementing a “total blockade,” encompassing restrictions on the entry of food and fuel.
Griffiths further stressed the critical importance of protecting civilians and safeguarding civilian infrastructure throughout the hostilities. He advocated for the safe evacuation of civilians to more secure areas and emphasized that humanitarian relief, as well as essential services and supplies for Gaza, should not be hindered or blocked.
