UN Aid Chief Hopes for Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza

NEW YORK: UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator has expressed the hope that pause in the war between Israel and Hamas will lead to permanent ceasefire.

Griffiths made the statement in a social media most on the first day of a four-day pause that is set to witness the release of 50 Israeli and 150 Palestinian captives.

The UN official wrote on X that more aid delivered into Gaza on first day of humanitarian pause. He added during the humanitarian pause that has been in place since this morning, the UN was able to enhance the delivery of humanitarian assistance into and across Gaza.

“I hope that this first day of the humanitarian pause is followed by many others and that it leads to a longer-term humanitarian ceasefire – for the benefit of the people of Gaza, Israel and beyond,” he said.

He added 137 trucks of goods were offloaded by the UNRWA at reception point in Gaza through Rafah crossing making it the biggest humanitarian convoy received since October 7.

Griffiths said hundreds of thousands of people were assisted with food, water, medical supplies and other basic humanitarian items.

He said the UN also welcomes the release of 24 hostages held in Gaza since October 7 and renews its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

The UN official said humanitarian teams will continue to boost humanitarian operations help the people throughout Gaza in the coming days.

According to health authorities in Gaza, Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attack, killing more than 14,854 Palestinians, including 6,150 children and over 4,000 women.
