UNITED NATIONS: The UN General Assembly has endorsed a resolution sponsored by Panama and Pakistan, designating January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy.

The text, approved without a vote, reaffirmed the 193-member Assembly’s dedication to environmental protection. To promote awareness of the sustainable use of energy resources and strengthen collaboration and cooperation in support of the global energy transition, January 26 will serve as a forum for adopting policies and practices.

Markova Concepcion Jaramillo, a delegate from Panama, introduced the draft and stated that switching to clean and renewable energy sources was necessary to address the current environmental and socioeconomic issues and ensure human survival and well-being.

Given that the energy industry is responsible for more than two-thirds of global emissions, the US delegate stated that her delegation supported the consensus. Speaking on behalf of the European Union, the French delegate expressed sadness that the resolution only mentions “cleaner fossil fuel energies” and fails to recognize the undeniable connection between energy and climate appropriately.
