UK’s Opposition Leader Starmer Vows to Do Away with House of Lords

LONDON: United Kingdom opposition Labour Party’s leader Sir Keir Starmer, vowed on Monday that on winning the polls he would do away with the House of Lords.

An elected House of Commons along with a non-elected House of Lords make up UK’s parliament.

This proposal is part of many recommendations from a report on Britain’s future, The work into the document was undertaken by ex-premier Prime Minister Gordon Brown. As per the note the Assembly of Nations and Regions, for whose membership elections would be a requirement, would replace the current House of Lords.

UK Opposition Leader’s Plan

Speaking to Sky News, Starmer that this is one of many recommendations which would be looked at, discussed with others, put to test, and find ways for its implementation.

Reacting to Starmer’s pledges, several Twitter users vocally commented on social media:

Starmer plans to carry out this change in the constitution during his first term. He added that he and his party would get one chance to set economics and politics right so the plan was to do that in the right manner.

Proposals on devolution

Apart from this, the proposals also being considered included ending the distribution of money from London and instead giving it directly to local areas. The devolved local authorities and government would be given new powers over transport, job creation, economic development, and housing.

For this purpose, the opposition party leader plans to double UK’s growth via groupings of economic activity. Approximately 10 percent or 50,000 government workers would be transferred outside London along with banning lawmakers from nearly all second jobs.
