KYIV: Frontline Ukrainian troops face shortages of mortar shells and have cut down some of military operations, a senior military officer told media on Monday.
Brig. Gen. Oleksandr Tarnavsky expressed the views after US Republican lawmakers halted up a $60-billion US military aid package and Hungary blocked $54.5 billion in European Union funding for Kyiv.
In an interview he said that there is a problem with arms, especially post-Soviet and even today these problems exist across the entire front line.
Tarnavskyi said the shortage of artillery shells is a very major problem for Ukraine and the drop in foreign military assistance is having a negative impact on its fight with Russia.
He added the current level of arms is not sufficient to meet the requirements of Ukraine.
The comments underline Kyiv’s dependence on Western military assistance to fight Russian troops along a 1,000-km front nearly 22 months into the biggest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
Tarnavskyi said Russian forces are also face same kind of ammunition problems but he did not specify their nature.
He said the Ukrainian troops have gone defensive in some areas but are trying to attack in other fronts.
He went on to say the Ukrainian forces still expect victories but need arms to continue their fight against Russian forces.
