KYIV / MIAMI: Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in the United States to hold high-level talks with the Trump administration aimed at ending nearly four years of war with Russia, a delegation member confirmed on Saturday.
The Ukrainian team, including security chief Rustem Umerov and negotiator David Arakhamia, is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll in Miami, reports AFP.
“A joint meeting with Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Daniel Driscoll is planned,” Kyrylo Budanov, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s top aide, said on social media.
“We will have an important conversation with our American partners regarding the details of the peace agreement.”
The discussions come just days ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two. Kyiv is seeking clarity on security guarantees from its allies and outlining plans for post-war reconstruction.
Trump has consistently called for an end to the war, expressing frustration at the lack of progress from both sides. The former US president has also reportedly pressed Ukraine to accept peace terms Kyiv regards as tantamount to capitulation.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington said the talks would primarily focus on security assurances and frameworks for rebuilding the country once hostilities end. Zelenskyy has expressed hope that formal agreements with the United States could be signed as early as next week.
Analysts note that while the meetings signal Washington’s continued engagement in the conflict, reaching a comprehensive peace agreement will remain challenging amid ongoing hostilities and political pressures from both Kyiv and Moscow.
