MOSCOW: A Ukrainian missile attack on Sunday targeted Sevastopol, located on the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula that left two persons dead and injured 22 others, the city’s Moscow-appointed governor said.
Sevastopol, a strategic Black Sea port city and naval base on the Crimean Peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, frequently faces attacks from Ukraine, but the casualties from Sunday’s assault were unusually high.
Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev reported on Telegram that the attack, allegedly carried out by Ukraine’s armed forces, resulted in the deaths of two civilians, including a two-year-old child, and injured 22 others.
Russian air defenses intercepted five missiles launched towards Sevastopol over the sea. However, fragments from intercepted missiles fell on shore, causing injuries from shrapnel. Razvozhayev mentioned that these missile fragments ignited fires in residential and wooded areas in the city’s northern regions.
In a separate incident earlier on Sunday, a drone allegedly launched by Ukraine struck Russia’s southern Belgorod region, resulting in the death of a civilian. Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported on Telegram that three Ukrainian attack drones targeted Graivoron, near the border, with one striking a car park near a residential building, causing injuries in addition to the fatality.
These incidents underscore ongoing tensions and sporadic violence in the region despite international efforts to broker peace.
