KYIV: Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of overnight airstrikes on their border regions, with Ukrainian officials saying that two people were killed and four were wounded in the Sumy region, and Russia saying three civilians sustained injuries in Belgorod.
The military administration of the northeastern Ukrainian region in a statement on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday said two children were among those injured in Sumy. It further said several residential houses and cars were damaged.
Across the border, in Russia’s Belgorod, three civilians, including two children were wounded in Ukraine’s air strike, said Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the region, on Telegram.
He added two residential buildings were destroyed while more than 15 buildings were damaged. The Russian defence ministry on Telegram claimed to have destroyed two Ukraine drones over Belgorod overnight.
Both the Sumy and Belgorod regions have been facing frequent attacks. Both sides reject targeting civilians, adding the attacks are aimed at damaging each other’s infrastructure vital to war efforts.
Thousands of civilians have been killed in the war, that started in February 2022. Millions of Ukrainians have also been displaced, while many of their cities and villages have become piles of rubble.
