KYIV: Ukraine has announced a breakthrough in its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces in the south, with the army reporting that senior Russian naval commanders were among those killed or wounded in a missile attack targeting Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Crimea.
General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy, leading the counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia region, informed US media that the advance was ongoing, particularly in the area near the village of Verbove. While progress has been gradual due to extensive minefields, Kyiv recently reported strategic gains in this region.
Tarnavskiy emphasized the importance of not losing the initiative and mentioned that a major breakthrough would be the recapture of Tokmak, a city situated 20 kilometers from the front line. Retaking Tokmak would allow Ukrainian forces to advance further towards occupied Melitopol and annexed Crimea.
Despite concerns about the upcoming winter months affecting the counteroffensive, Tarnavskiy expressed confidence in the military’s ability to adapt to the weather conditions, especially considering their reliance on infantry movements rather than vehicles.
He described the current fighting as consisting of small assault squads, typically composed of 10 to 15 individuals, which play a crucial role in concentrating enemy fire and surviving in the challenging battlefield environment.
Ukraine Missile Strike on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet Headquarters
This news follows a missile strike by Kyiv on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol, Crimea. Ukrainian intelligence claimed that the attack targeted “senior” commanders during a meeting of the Russian navy’s leadership. Kyrylo Budanov, Kyiv’s intelligence chief, reported “at least nine people” killed in the strike, including generals. The Ukrainian army claimed that the attack resulted in dozens of dead and wounded occupants. Russia has stated that one of its servicemen is missing following the attack.
Ukraine has been steadfast in its vow to reclaim Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent diplomatic efforts, including addressing the United Nations and meetings with international leaders like Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden, have garnered support and additional aid for the war-torn country.
