KYIV: Ukraine has formally protested against Poland and the European Union (EU) over the imposition of trade barriers on Ukrainian agricultural produce transiting through Poland.

The temporary trade barriers were imposed by several countries bordering Ukraine, including Poland after local farmers protested against a slump in prices.

Foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko stated that notes regarding the “categorically unacceptable situation of trade curbs on the imports of agricultural products from Ukraine” were sent to Poland’s embassy and the EU’s mission in Ukraine.

Ukraine calls for resumption of exports

Ukraine called for the “immediate” resumption of exports and claimed that the curbs violated the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU “and the norms and principles of the EU Single Market.”

Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia agreed on Friday to allow the transit of Ukrainian farm produce. The traditional export channel of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea has been limited due to Russia’s invasion, necessitating export overland.
