WASHINGTON: Ukraine’s counter-offensive against Russia is far from a failure, but the war ahead will be bloody and long, the top US military official said on Tuesday.

REUTERS REPORTED THAT the US and other partners have spent several months building Ukraine a “mountain of steel” of arsenal and training Ukrainian troops in combined arms methods to help Kyiv stab tough Russian defenses during its counter-offensive.
Responding to a question, General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replied: “It is far from a failure.” He added that the counteroffensive would be slow. He said that the war is going to be long and hard.

Since Ukraine started its counteroffensive last month, Ukraine has recaptured several villages in the south and areas around the ruined city of Bakhmut in the east but has yet to take a major breakthrough across severely garrisoned Russian lines.
Ukraine says it is intentionally advancing slowly in order to avoid high casualties on fortified defensive lines strewn with landmines. However, Russia says the Ukrainian counteroffensive had failed.
