KYIV: Ukrainian forces have taken control over 82 settlements and over 1,150 square kilometers of territory in Russia’s Kursk region, Ukraine’s top military chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, said Thursday. The Ukrainian military advancement marks a significant escalation in the conflict as Ukraine’s largest cross-border offensive extends into its second week.

Syrsky detailed the progress made by Ukrainian troops, noting that their operations have pushed 35 kilometers deep into Russian-held territory in the Kursk region. “Since the start of operations, our troops have made significant advances,” Syrsky said.

The Ukrainian offensive has reportedly captured a substantial area of land and several villages, representing a notable shift in the dynamics of the conflict. This latest development comes amid increased hostilities and a heightened state of alert on both sides of the border.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry said that Russian troops have recaptured a village in the Kursk region that had previously been seized by Ukrainian forces. The Russian ministry claimed that its troops had successfully restored control over the settlement of Krupets after engaging in what it described as the “destruction of the enemy.”

The Russian defence ministry also reported that its forces are actively working to repel further Ukrainian incursions. Utilizing aircraft, artillery, and drones, Russian forces have reportedly thwarted additional Ukrainian attacks, including attempts to advance further into Russian territory with mobile groups.

Moscow said that using aircraft, artillery and drones, its forces had “foiled the latest enemy attacks” including attempts to break through deeper into Russian territory using mobile groups.
