KYIV: Ukraine claimed that all 10 Kinzhal ballistic missiles fired by Russia during its large-scale attack on Tuesday were successfully downed by US-supplied Patriot surface-to-air missile systems. The Ukrainian army’s commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny, confirmed the record-breaking interception on social media.
The Kinzhal missiles, known for their high speed and previously claimed indestructibility by Russian President Vladimir Putin, posed a significant threat. The successful interception by the Patriot systems averted potentially catastrophic consequences, underscoring the effectiveness of Western-supplied defense technology in Ukraine.
Expressing gratitude to Ukraine’s Western allies for providing the Patriot systems, Zaluzhny highlighted the importance of continued support in the face of evolving threats. He stated, “There is no reason to believe that the enemy will stop here. Therefore, we need more systems and munition for them.”
Western Allies Support for Ukraine
Ukraine’s plea for enhanced military assistance comes as the conflict with Russia approaches its two-year mark. The country has consistently emphasized the critical role of the Patriot air defense system in its defense strategy and urged Western allies to expedite weapons deliveries.
The large-scale missile attack by Russia on Ukraine on Tuesday resulted in at least five fatalities and numerous injuries in the capital Kyiv and northeastern Kharkiv. The assault followed Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s vow to escalate strikes on Ukraine, marking a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two nations.
