KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s advisor Mykhailo Podolyak has hit out at Beijing for “betting on an aggressor” (referring to Russia) after China repeated its call for a political solution to the Ukraine war.

“If you claim to be an international player, you do not offer an unrealistic plan,” Podolyak tweeted.

“You do not bet on an aggressor who violated international law and will lose the Ukraine war.”

On Friday, China released a proposed plan outlining its position on the Ukraine crisis.

China presents peace plan to end Ukraine crisis

In it, the Chinese Foreign Ministry called for a resumption of peace negotiations, stressed its opposition to the use of nuclear arms, and an end to unilateral sanctions on Russia, an apparent criticism of measures opposed by the West and the US.

China has sought to keep itself neutral over the conflict but so far has avoided declaring it an invasion and has kept up economic and diplomatic support for Moscow.

Zelensky said Friday that Ukraine “will work with China” if they respect international law and territorial integrity. Zelensky said he would like to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

US President Joe Biden on Friday said there is no evidence “so far” that China will militarily support Russia in Ukraine while warning that any support would have economic consequences for Beijing.
