UK Rescuers Save Mother, Kid Trapped for 68 hours in Turkey

ANKARA: The UK volunteer rescuers have rescued a mother and her 5-year-old kid, who were stuck for 68 hours under a collapsed building in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, British reported on Thursday.

The house of Serap Topal and her son Mehmet was reduced to wreckage when the 7.8 magnitude quake struck on Monday. Media reports suggest that mother and her son were trapped in darkness for 86 hours, covered in debris and dust. The two were finally saved by volunteers from SARAID, a British group, along with a German rescue team.

A video footage capturing the moment they were saved shows Serap Topal bursting into tears of tiredness and relief, while a rescue worker carries her son Mehmet, who appears unhurt. Spectators can be heard chanting “God is Greatest.”

Hundreds of tents were established as shelters in a sports ground. Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan also visited area of Kahramanmaras on Wednesday. He said there had been problems with airport and road access to the quake-hit region, but “they are better today.”
