ISLAMABAD/UK: Network Rail said that the walkouts by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) members on 3-4 and 6-7 January, and by Aslef drivers on 5 January, could “significantly impact” services.
Train strikes
According to the BBC, RMT union members rejected offers in an issue over pay, job security and working conditions.
Train drivers at 15 rail companies in the Aslef union are striking over pay. Network Rail, which maintains rails, signals and stations, said that the combination of strikes would result in only about 20 percent of services running, with many areas not seeing any trains.
The strikes could affect services across England, Scotland and Wales. A spokesperson from Network Rail said, “We’re sorry to have to, once again, tell the passengers to avoid using the railway this week,”.
The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents the train operating companies, also urged people only to travel if “necessary”. Trains that do run could start later or finish much earlier than usual, with services typically running between 7:30 am and 6.30 pm on the days of the strike.
Passengers have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check before they travel. It has the latest in a series of strikes across the rail network, which have caused significant disruption.
Department for Transport spokesperson said, “the government has demonstrated it is reasonable and stands ready to facilitate a resolution to rail issues.
